Creating Support Together

Adolescents are both brilliant and fragile and they need our understanding, acceptance and support.

Collaborating with parents and  caregivers of the adolescent.

I feel humbled when a parent/caregiver entrusts their teenager or refers their young adult into my professional care. Being a counsellor is a role that I value and love. I am 100% committed and dedicated to supporting the healthy development and wellbeing of your child, should they choose to work with me.

I am a big believer in working in collaboration with parents and caregivers; relative to the client’s age and to a degree that feels right for the parent, caregiver and adolescent. Both the research around counselling adolescents and my experience confirms that being inclusive, to the extent that is appropriate for both the adolescent and parents / caregivers, can be a powerful resource in providing the needed support around the adolescent.

At times there may be a need to reach further out into the community to work with others to form a network of support around the adolescent. With your direct permission (or suggestion) I am more than prepared to work with schools, doctors, community organisations and other professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for your child.

Support  for Parents and Caregivers.

Consultation

Some parents/caregivers may seek guidance on how to better parent a teen, manage challenging behaviours or address other concerns within the family. I am more than happy to sit down with parents and caregivers for a scheduled consultation, exploring what is going on and discussing possible ways forward. A personalised consultation offers the opportunity to directly address a specific situation. After all, every relationship and every family is completely unique, with its own strengths, challenges and needs. If you think this may be helpful for you, please book a session with me.

Therapeutic Options for Families

Family issues that weigh on the mind of parents and caregivers, need to be addressed. Counsellors can offer appropriate guidance and facilitation. Therapeutic work as a family is full of potential, allowing the family to address the family’s issues together. Issues may include grief,  tension or rupture, unresolveable differences or other difficulties that compromise the functioning life of the family.

Please note that therapy for families works in sub groups too, for example it may only be 2 or 3 members of the family unit who have an issue to resolve.

Please contact me if you are wanting to either book a consultation, or a therapy session for your family.

The terms Parent and Caregiver are used to denote primary guardianship of the adolescent client. A parental figure may have no biological connection to the adolescent. After all, family structures are complex and diverse, just like the world in which we live.
